Plumbing Tips & Maintenance

For blocked sinks/basins try squeezing the rubber trap a few times until it blockage clears.

Make sure you know where your main stop valve is and check whether it is conveniently accessible.

If you have a basin, shower or bath that is not used frequently, the water in the trap may evaporate causing sewer gases to enter the house. Pour a bucket of water into the drain weekly to ensure proper water seal.

Ensure your plumbing fittings and taps are SABS approved as cheap non-SABS items are going to give problems and cost more in the long run.

Make sure the seal around your bath is in good condition and water- tight to prevent dampness spreading into bathroom walls and floor.

Do not flush any products other than toilet paper down your toilet. This prevents blocked drains and septic tanks.

Do not use excessive amounts of bleach or chemicals that end up down drains, killing off the bacteria in your septic tank. Using biodegradable detergents are effective in keeping a healthy septic tank and sewer system.

When it comes to geysers that need replacing: Check if the geyser is still under guarantee/ it might be covered by your house insurance.
